SUPRÊME NTM
On tour: no
Suprême NTM is a French rap group composed of Kool Shen (Bruno Lopes), JoeyStarr (Didier Morville) and initially DJ'S. JoeyStarr and Kool Shen claim their origins (they grew up in Seine-Saint-Denis), which is why the group was initially called 93 NTM. Their words are imbued with the inequalities and violence they experienced growing up, they criticize racism and take a realistic look at the situation in the suburbs. Their musical style is that of hardcore and authentic rap, sometimes evolving towards more lightness with the titles La Fever and Pass pass le oinj which helped to make Suprême NTM known.
Passionate about hip hop culture directly imported from the United States, Kool Shen and JoeyStarr were first interested in street dance (breakdancing and smurf). In 1984, the television show “Hip Hop” launched the phenomenon and served as a real springboard. JoeyStarr and Kool Shen started a group, Actuel Force, won several breakdance competitions in France and toured Europe.
They then became known through graffiti, another form of street expression, and then became part of a posse called NTM which, by later associating with the 93 MC of Saint-Denis, became the 93 NTM.
Influenced by the beginnings of French rap, Kool Shen and JoeyStarr, who had already started writing lyrics, appeared publicly in 1989 on Radio Nova accompanied by a DJ, DJ'S. They then began to participate in a few concerts and in 1990 their title Je rap appeared on the first French rap compilation: Rapattitude. This year marked their first TV appearance on Canal+, it was on this occasion that they were spotted by Epic, a Sony Music label, who signed them.
In 1991, Suprême NTM released its first album Authentik with the titles The world of tomorrow, Money rots people, It's clear. The album sold 90 copies in a few months. A first tour followed which ended at a full Zénith in Paris in 000, the first for a rap group.
Their second album 1993… I'm Pulling the Trigger, which contains the tracks Police and I'm Pulling the Trigger, was released in 1993.
1995 was the year of Paris under the bombs, an album on which the titles La Fever, Everything is not so easy and What are we waiting for appeared and which was a huge success with 500 copies sold.
The acclaimed album Suprême NTM was released in 1998. On the day of its release, 40 copies were sold, which represents a record for a rap album, even today. The songs Ma Benz, That's My People, Laisse pas drager ton fils and Seine-Saint-Denis Style became hits and made the group tour throughout France. The tour ends at the Zénith in Paris which, due to the impressive demand, even has to be extended until the concert on December 000, 18 in Geneva.
In 2010, the group played at the Parc des Princes and thus became the first rap group to fill a stadium.
2018 will mark the 20th anniversary of the anthology album Suprême NTM. A reissue of the album with bonus tracks is planned as well as a new best of and their reunion on stage at the AccorHotels Arena.
